In-depth reporting on how policy shapes everyday life — from courtrooms, to hospitals, to living rooms.

The true cost of young cancer

Cancer rates are rising for Americans in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. These patients are diagnosed at a pivotal stage of life: they’re building families, kickstarting careers, and finding their financial footing.

For our true cost of young cancer series, Business Insider spoke with patients, doctors, caregivers, researchers, and economists to understand how the illness can derail a young person’s life — and why the US healthcare system is ill-equipped to address it.

I collaborated on the project from start to finish, reporting an original profile about new mom diagnosed with cervical cancer at 35, and taking a deep dive into the ways cancer can reshape career paths. My exclusive data analysis tallied the medical and hidden costs of an advanced colon cancer diagnosis for 30-something patients.

What 4,000 older Americans wish you knew about retirement

Seventy-four million Americans receive Social Security — many of whom are seniors relying on it as their primary income. To understand the US’ safety net for older adults, Business Insider spoke with hundreds of retirees and received survey responses from thousands of others. They spoke about their finances, careers, social lives, and the lessons they hope to pass to younger generations.

I co-created and reported the project. The 17-part series included features, original data analysis, solutions stories, trend-focused coverage, and a video. It was nominated by the newsroom for various local and national awards, including the Pulitzer Prize.

The Abortion Issue

After Roe v. Wade was overturned,I led a newsroom project focused entirely on reproductive healthcare: a comprehensive package with a dedicated print edition, interactive webpage, 16 news articles, nine opinion pieces, a podcast episode, a video feature and a newsletter. The DTH staff highlighted the significant medical, legal, financial and political implications of abortion access in North Carolina — the history of the procedure and what comes next.

The project won first place in digital storytelling from the North Carolina College Media Association and is a national Pacemaker finalist for excellence in digital storytelling. It also contributed to The DTH’s Pacemaker recognition as one of America’s top university newsrooms in 2023.

Seeking an abortion in post-Roe Texas

Thirteen women sued Texas for medically-necessary abortions they say were delayed or denied due to state bans. I covered the story closely — profiling the plaintiffs, breaking news, reporting live from an Austin courtroom, sharing insight on local TV and looking ahead at healthcare policy as the case goes to the Texas Supreme Court.
